Child Welfare, A.A.S.

The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Child Welfare program equips you with the knowledge and skills to work as a Child Welfare Specialist in the WV Department of Human Services (formerly DHHR). Through a combination of classroom learning and practical experience, you will gain a strong foundation in child development, advocacy, and support systems.

This degree was built in response to HB 3261 granting the WV Department of Human Services the option to hire individuals with an associate degree to pursue positions in child protective services. 

Program Outcomes:

  • Assessment Skills: Assess the safety and well-being of children in potentially neglectful or abusive situations. This might involve interviewing children and families, observing home environments, and collaborating with other professionals.
  • Intervention Strategies: Use various intervention strategies for children and families through safety planning, referrals, and case management.
  • Client Advocacy: Advocate for the best interests of children.
  • Cultural Competency: Understand cultural diversity and its impact on child welfare.
  • Knowledge of Child Abuse and Neglect Laws: Understand the legal framework surrounding child welfare, including mandatory reporting requirements and different types of abuse and neglect.
  • Communication and Collaboration Skills: Communicate and collaborate effectively with children, families, social workers, law enforcement, and other professionals.

Career Opportunities:

This degree prepares students for an entry-level position as a Child Welfare Specialist in WV Department of Human Services. Completion of this degree does not guarantee employment.
